Before embarking on chemotherapy, we understand that many of our clients may be overwhelmed with uncertainty, grappling with a mixture of fear and anticipation as they approach their treatment. It's crucial to acknowledge that these emotions are entirely natural, and we want you to know that we empathise with your journey. To provide support during this challenging time, we've carefully crafted this friendly guide to outline essential steps and offer personalised guidance and advice tailored to your unique circumstances.
First Steps:
Don't Panic: Take a deep breath; there is time, and we are here to assist you promptly.
Consider a Photo: We recommend capturing a photo of your natural hair before treatment if you wish to maintain your own style.
Explore Wig Options: Research and make decisions about synthetic, heat-resistant, or real hair wigs. Synthetic and heat-resistant options are easy to care for and budget-friendly, while human hair wigs provide a more natural look and feel. For more information, visit our website at BowBelles.co.uk.
Consultation Scheduling:
During your first initial chemotherapy treatment, your nurse will help you anticipate when hair loss may occur. If you are an NHS patient, your dedicated nurse will discuss available wig provisions that they provide. For private hospital attendees, contact your insurers to enquire about potential cost assistance. It is worth noting that individuals facing medical hair loss are exempt from paying VAT.
When should you contact Bow Belles for an initial consultation?:
Standard Chemotherapy Treatment:You should anticipate hair loss around day 19 after the first session. Contact us directly after your initial treatment to schedule a free consultation.
Cold Cap Treatment: Monitor and wait to assess the extent of hair loss. Typically, we see clients around day 40 after the first treatment, or if you prefer not to wait until the shedding occurs or not sure if a wig is for you and want to explore your options then you can opt for an initial consultation for a £35 fee.
What Can You Expect at Your Consultation?:
At Bow Belles, our focus extends beyond offering wigs, we are devoted specialists in cancer hair care. Whether you're at the beginning of your hair-loss journey or already navigating through it, Billie and I are here to provide compassionate guidance. During our time together, we seek to understand your unique needs, collect information about your colour and style preferences to complement your individuality or replicate the natural look of your bio hair. We will also demonstrate the difference between all wig types and our aim to address any concerns you may have and warmly welcome any questions you'd like to discuss. Consultations can be tailored to your comfort, conducted face-to-face, virtually via Zoom or FaceTime.
Preparing for Your Hair Replacement Fitting:
The alternative hair fitting occurs after the initial consultation in a private fitting room with one of us. You'll have the opportunity to try on selected styles discussed during the consultation, creating a personalised shopping experience for your hair. Once we find your perfect choice, we'll cut and customise your wig, providing guidance on attachment, styling, washing, maintenance, scalp care, and addressing any questions you may have.
Note: We are passionate about our work and approach it with empathy and care. Our commitment goes beyond placing wigs on your head and leaving you there: we are dedicated to accompanying you through your personal journey and help whenever you need us even post treatment regarding your new hair growth needs.
